BVA WELCOMES ROYAL ASSENT FOR VIDEO RECORDINGS ACT

BVA logo22 January 2010:  Lavinia Carey, Director General of the British Video Association welcomed the fact the revived Act has passed into law saying:

“The BVA welcomes the fact that the Video Recordings Act is now fully enforceable. Ever since it emerged that the Act may not be enforceable, last August, the BVA’s members have continued to conduct their business as usual, submitting works to the BBFC for classification and providing consumer advice on packaging so that the public can continue to rely on the labelling supplied.”

In August 2009 it was revealed that, the 1984 Video Recordings Act was not registered with the European Commission and was therefore not enforceable. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport stressed it had received legal advice that people who had previously been prosecuted and convicted would be unable to overturn their convictions or seek compensation. The Bill received Royal Assent and passed into law on 21 January 2010.
